Silves cottage is a traditional “casa de campo” within an orange farm with on-site full-time residents. Set in a very private aglomeration of properties with communal pool and a large orchard, the property is only a few minutes’ drive from the charming town of Silves. Nicely fitted and equipped, with plenty of traditional decorative pieces included such as a woodburner, private patio and even a back yard.
Silves was the capital of the Algarve during the Arab occupation between the 8th and the 12th centuries. Mainly due to the presence of the navigable Arade river, Silves was also a cultural centre where poets and historians lived. The town’s tradition comes to life in August when the Medieval Fair of Silves takes place in the historic centre for 10 days. It attracts more than 100,000 visitors.
Silves Castle, considered the most beautiful example of Arab military architecture in the country, is the largest of the Algarve. Silves does not have a large number of hotels, so there is no greater influx of tourists in the high season. Its population being more or less the same throughout the year: about 7,000 inhabitants.
The walls are made of red sandstone (grés de Silves) with a pisé-core and have been heavily restored in the 1940s. Protruding towers of albarra-type protect the Northern slope. After the Christian conquest, the castle served as the seat of the alcaide-mor (provincial governor) till the middle of the 16th century. Afterwards the towers were used as a prison.
